Steady Heart

“So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle.”
James 1:16-18 MSG

The heart of man – so fickle and so easily swayed. So rebellious, so full of clamor, so easily shaken. Tossed to and fro like the wind, deceitful above all things. But not God. From eternity’s past, He has been, and all the way to eternity’s end, beyond what we can ever see or comprehend, He will be. He never says one thing and does another. He never changes His mind and His word is always true. He is never shocked. He never falls off of His throne. He is strong, He is certain, He is unfailing.

So is the one whose trust is in Him. When we build our hopes on Him, we can always walk on steady ground. The wind and the waves can come, but we will not be shaken, because the One we cling on to is greater than ourselves and He becomes the One who guards us and covers us. When we dare to root ourselves in Him, we will be as a tree, with steady hearts that are safe for ourselves and safe for the ones around us.

That is the difference between the man full of pride, and the man who is humble. The proud man crumbles because he walks on his own, but the humble man is a mighty oak of strength because his hope is not in himself but in One who is greater.

On our own we are like leaves blown about in the wind. But the one who trusts Him will never be shaken.
