Love

Let’s keep the Main Thing the main thing.

Tonight my heart burns within me. He brings to remembrance things I have locked away and forgotten for far too long.

As I think upon His great love, tears well up in my eyes. I don’t know why I run around in circles when my head knows that it is only Him that I need. When He is the only One who can give me what my heart cries for. You’d think I’d have learnt by now but I just keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. I keep returning back to the same old broken lovers who do nothing but leave scars on my heart.

But oh how Your presence realigns me. You center me back to what truly matters. In a single moment, all these other things that weighed so heavy on me simply fall off. You are the Love that I need, the only Love that matters; that will stand and fiercely fight for my heart at the end of the day.

How I love You, You have not forsaken me.

Did You Learn To Love?

“The measure of a man is the measure of his heart,

The measure of a man is the measure of his love.”

Few words have struck me as deeply as these. We cannot define greatness on our own terms, we have to define them by His. Only two commandments did He give to us – the entire Law hangs upon these two simple lines. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbor.

If all of life comes down to love – if greatness is defined solely by this rightful pursuit of our hearts – then we must learn to do it well. How can we afford otherwise?

At the end of my days, when I stand before Him I want to do so with a heart that is tender, a heart that has been enlarged by life to love and love well. If this is how He defines greatness, then may I always live up to His standards and not the world’s. The world asks me for my career, my beauty, my status, my fame. But He cuts through all of that and asks me of only one thing – my heart.

May I exchange my vain ideas and empty ambitions for what truly counts before the throne of God. I want to build my life upon this one and singular firm foundation, because I know that everything else will one day burn away before His eyes of fire.

You don’t measure me like man may see, You’re looking at my heart; the core of me. When it’s all been said, when it’s all been done, when the race is run – it all comes down to love.

“Did you learn to love?” is what You will ask of me.

“Did you learn to love?” not about my ministry.

“Did you learn to love?” not about my money.

“…Did you learn to love?”

What It Means To Be A Person Of One Thing

There is a war that rages in my heart. It is a war of love and affections. I try to fight it on my own but I cannot. I try to build walls, try to keep my heart pure and clean from distraction – gazed at only One. But on my own I am not strong enough. I am pulled from all sides and my attention is demanded by so many.

But this I know, in the presence of great Love, all other weaker loves fade away. What had seemed to burn so bright simply dims away. How can a flickering candle compare to the beautiful shining sun?

When the rushing tidal wave of His love crashes over me, every single fort I had frantically tried to build to keep other lovers out cease to serve their purpose. They don’t even need to be there anymore, because my gaze is so turned away from every other lover and I am utterly consumed by this single One most beautiful.

False love occupies space in our hearts. It demands. It takes and takes. But great Love frees us and fills us. The fierceness I had tried to conjure up all on my own is suddenly taken over by a stillness. A still knowing that I need not fight, I need only stay. The fight in me is put to rest by what my Father so willingly pours out. What rest for my weary heart! What peace..

Everything melts away when I look at Him. Above every other love, I will choose Him.

Extravagant Devotion

We are living in unusual hours where God is raising up a people of extravagant devotion to partner with Him to do the extraordinary acts. As He promised, there is a time coming where He will pour out His spirit in such a way that will far surpass the book of Acts. No eye has seen and no mind has dreamed of the kind of works He is about to do through His people in the last days.

But if our hearts are not ready, God will hold back. This is His kindness, because if we are not first established in love, our hearts will move the moment signs and wonders come. If our reward is not Jesus alone, our eyes will be taken off Him and focused onto ourselves the moment He allows great works to flow through our lives. Our reward has to be found in living before His eyes alone. Our success has to come not from ministry, nor signs and wonders, but in loving Him and being loved by Him.

We cannot do extravagant acts until we have extravagant devotion. Then and only then, our hearts will not move. Miracles, signs and wonders are good things – but they are simply a sideshow. Above all, He desires hearts that burn before Him.

So Lord, do not promote us until our hearts are ready. Hide us in Your presence, and root us deep in the soil of Your love. Do not send us out until You alone have become our One Thing.

The Fragrance of True Worship

When Mary broke her alabaster jar, the fragrance of the costly perfume filled the entire room. All who were present could smell it.

In the same way, there is a beautiful fragrance that arises from the worship of the one who is broken in love at His feet. It is impossible not to recognize.

The worship offering that is genuine, and more than that, sacrificial, carries with it fragrance and life. Let our worship be more than empty songs and clanging cymbals. Let our ministry to the heart of Jesus be like fragrant incense, arising from the depths of our very being. He is worthy of the most costly perfume, and the sweetest heart sacrifice.
